Since I’ve been in this industry for many years, I had the opportunity to do some in-depth research on both of them. Here’s what I found.

Speed

The obvious surface between is the speed- a big deal for the user which has mass production on their order. However, speed depends on drum size only despite its oil or electric.

From experience, I will list the formula above:(It’s not for advertisement)

Now let’s set an example, suppose the speed controller is 30HZ, drum is 0.21m(210mm)

V={ {60 * 30HZ } / ½ *4 / 120 } * 0.21(m) * 3.14

  = 4.9455m/min.

That means, for 210mm drum, when you set the speed to 30HZ on speed controller, the working speed is 4.9455m/min

Here’s the summary of the data, in theory, I got from different suppliers in the market and with this VBR value( of course, the speed controller should be adjusted by different users and different gear reducers apply for different drums. I just list the rough for your reference) :

  • Ø210mm – 4.9455m/min
  • Ø370mm – 8.7135m/min
  • Ø420mm – 9.891m/min
  • Ø500mm – 11.775m/min
  • Ø600mm – 14.13m/min
  • Ø800mm – 18.84m/min
  • Ø1000mm – 23.55m/min

Power Consumption

Although I don’t own an electric drum or heat press in my facility, I found that some users are pleased to use an electric drum in a home. It’s friendly for small businesses and has a breath of fresh air. The power consumption of the electric drum is indeed lower than the oil one.  It’s impossible for home users to use oil drum, especially the bigger drum as the household voltage is not allowed. 

Once you’re hooked up with oil drum heat press, you should see how much power consumption. Surprisingly though, the speed and work process does work more stable than the electric drum.

Functional

There is no doubt that they’re both compatible with sublimation. Users’ final result is to get a good product after transferring by the drum. Apparently, due to the various sizes of oil drum, the functions are more than electric drum.  For oil drum, The whole panel is independently owned and operated in one LCD panel. It is equipped with a temperature controller, speed controller, ON switch, Auto OFF switch, pressure switch, and Emergency switch. Compared with oil, the electric drum presents more easy function, it can only have a temperature display, press display, and speed controller. 

Oil drum also allows you to manage your order which different sizes of stuff. The electric drum is limited to use as the size is small and can not extend.

Pricing

Oil drum is more expensive but it has several advantages(such as speed, uniform heating, and various drum) and has high performance thus greatly improving your experience.  Based it has various size, the price range from $4,000 to $20,000. That said, I strongly suggest going through your deep demand to avoid spending extra money on a machine that doesn’t include the size that does not fit your order. 

If your current goal is to establish your brand’s credibility and with limited budget, electric drum is ideal for you.  The price range from $1600-$2500. In my opinion, electric drum is acceptable for personal and short-term business use only, in other words, if you want to own a professional sublimation and familiarize yourself with sublimation, then upgrade the machine. This is the right choice for you.

Service

Last but not least, you should also take service support from suppliers into consideration. A good supplier saves your time and greatly improve the usage and productivity of the machine.

Oil Drum VS Electric Drum of Calendar press – Summary

So, for a final verdict. Electric drum is a easy-to-use equipment with good pricing. However, supplier which produce electric drum is willing to admit that the heating is not uniform than oil drum. Oil drums aren’t the more affordable ones when standing with electric drum. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try the electric drum. If you have a further business plan or market strategy, you can consider the oil drum.
